Find the right activity and club
Many things need to be clarified before start-up if there is to be any chance of success. Many children and parents feel the same way. Sometimes it’s the interest that drives the desire – and sometimes it’s the art of the possibilities.
Below we have gathered a lot of considerations that are good to think about, but in the end, it’s all about knowing the exactly right club. And we do! So if you’re about to give up on leisure options, contact us instead. Then we find the solutions together. Everyone can get active in their free time. You or your child too.

Activity selection
When you’re faced with choosing a leisure activity, the most important thing is of course always to feel what you want to do.
- Should it be something with a ball?
- Do you like to work up a sweat?
- Do you prefer a calm environment where you have to concentrate?
But when you have special needs and disabilities, there can be many other issues that are just as important to consider.
Once you’re aware of what’s a good fit for you, the next step is how to find a class that matches your specific needs.
Match to your needs
A good place to start is by matching yourself against,
which environment you need:
- How big can the team be?
- Should the pace of teaching be fast or slower?
- Is it best to have visual support along the way?
- Is it easier when there is a good structure to your training?
- Are there any specific support measures you need?
- Is competitive sports fun or does it frustrate you instead?
- How difficult or easy do you find team sports where you are constantly interacting with others around the sport?
- Do you want the location to have few exits and an easy overview so you don’t suddenly get lost?
- Should there not be too much glass with the possibility of sunlight and flashes of light that can trigger epileptic seizures?
- Is the access suitable for you if you are visually impaired or in a wheelchair?
Not to mention all the practicalities of distance, transportation, finances, etc.
Ask, ask, ask! Call the club, talk to the coach, stop by the training and take a look (if you’re a parent, you can take a look yourself before inviting your child along).
Design your first experience
Decide in advance that you want to try out at least 2 different teams or sports before you decide. This means it’s not an ‘either-or’ situation when you come by to try on or look at the team.
And then there are some things you need to make sure of when you show up:
- Call and talk to the coach about exactly what you need for your sport. Be honest. It’s better to miss out on a good experience than to be exposed to a bad experience.
- The coach of the team needs to know exactly which training session you are coming to.
- Arrive early – it can be difficult to find the right place.
- If you find it difficult to show up yourself, bring your parent or a friend.
Meet the karate fighter Frederikke
Frederik is 11 years old and attends a special school for children with severe general learning difficulties. It can be difficult for Frederikke to express exactly what she’s thinking, but when the opportunity presented itself, she had no doubt: Frederikke repeatedly pointed to martial arts as her sport!
Today, Frederikke has been practicing karate for more than a year and there are now several parts of the training that Frederikke participates in completely independently – and then there are parts where a junior coach steps in and guides. But it’s no longer mom and dad who are on the training mat and Frederikke is very happy with that – she loves putting on the gi and heading off to karate training.
- Need support to complete the activities
- Need concrete and visual instructions during training
- Need few simple exercises and very low complexity
Follow Frederikke’s lead – find the sport that matches you
On our new Specialsport search portal, we give you a wide range of options to set your own criteria for sport selection. You can search through your own personal filtering, or you can choose the profile you think suits you best.
